Can Parrots Eat Carrots?

Yes, carrots are a healthy vegetable for parrots. They contain vitamin C, carotenoids, and a variety of antioxidants. Each different color of carrot contains different antioxidants, and the way a carrot is prepared affects the amount of each nutrient present.

Carrots are one of the most common vegetables grown worldwide. They have many nutritional benefits for both people and birds. So, keep reading and find out the benefits of feeding your parrot carrots!

There are four main groups of nutrients in carrots that make them a healthy food to enjoy. These are vitamin C, carotenoids, phenolic compounds and polyacetylenes.

 

  • Vitamin C

Is an essential nutrient that plays many roles in the body. It has  powerful antioxidant properties. It can help in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.  And, it can help prevent and treat numerous cancers. Vitamin C is needed for the body to make certain proteins.

  • Carotenoids

They include many plant pigments responsible for colors red to yellow, and carrots contain two types of carotenoids:

   – Carotenes. They are a provitamin A nutrient (a nutritional precursor to vitamin A) and are converted into vitamin A (rentinol) in a healthy liver.

   – Xanthophylls. Are an important antioxidant family. They can help  protect the nervous system. And can help treat numerous eye diseases. That include age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts.

  • Phenolic compounds

These powerful antioxidants scavenge free radicals and provide anti-aging benefits. They  are anti-inflammatory, and can help prevent cancer. And they can help prevent cardiovascular diseases.

  • Polyacetylenes

This unique group of phytochemicals have powerful anti-cancerous, antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory effects. Also they help balance mood!
