This product is certified organic. When buying broccoli seeds for sprouting make sure you are buying organic broccoli seeds look for this latin botanical name (Brassica oleracea var. italica). This is important because some are selling raab broccoli (Brassica rapa var. Ruvo), and advertising them as seeds for growing broccoli sprouts.

The raab seeds contain very low levels of glucoraphanin, the glucosinolate precursor that is transformed into sulforaphane. (3) So the raab sprouts would not provide the high levels of sulforaphane that the broccoli sprouts are known for. Hence, your birds would not receive the benefits described here.

Our organic Broccoli Sprouts.

Researchers have identified more than 120 glucosinolates in plants. Furthermore, each different glucosinolate produces a unique isothiocyanate. One of these is glucoraphanin.

The plant enzyme myrosinase is set-free whenever broccoli is cut, chewed or digested. It is this myrosinase enzyme that transforms the glucoraphanin into the antioxidant sulforaphane in the body. (1)

Highlighting Sulforaphane

The glucosinolate in broccoli sprouts that is one of the most studied health promoting anti-cancer antioxidants is sulforaphane. Studies have shown that nutrition can influence gene expression. And most importantly this antioxidant in broccoli sprouts has been identified as altering gene expression. This means this antioxidant can turn off disease genes. When examining the bioavailability of sulforaphane in broccoli researchers found that because this compound easily combines with or can be dissolved in fats. It also has has a low molecular weight, so it easily passes into cells. (2) These qualities is what enables sulforaphane to produce so many beneficial effects in the body.

When fresh broccoli sprouts are fed as a part of a parrot’s balanced food plan these whole food-based molecules have the potential for supporting healthy cellular and biochemical body functions in ways that far exceeds what supplements can offer.
